Things to do

This module serves as a guide as to how we might begin to prepare for a multitude of disasters, calamities and unfortunate situations. Identifying our environment and surroundings as well as our resources and personal strengths is fundamental for understanding the potential outcomes of how we will react in desperate times. Awareness to these characteristics can initiate changes in how we think which often defines the level of effort put into succeeding. Taking action and moving forward is a proactive reaction for self preservation and survival. Being ready and prepared is the result.

.

.

There are things we can do during our life course to decrease the chances of becoming a statistic or victim of a disastrous event. Some of these things are general type actions while others are specific. The aim is to survive beyond the event and to increase the odds of successful transition into a safe and prosperous future.

.

Overview

A commonality between survival minded enthusiasts is the decision that is made to be better prepared, ... which in many cases came from a realization that prompted concern for our life or the ones we care about. This concern can quickly become a strange kind of burden which once realized may only be satisfied with acceptable solutions. Solutions that satisfy those concerns are often specific and unique for each one of our situations.

That being said, ... there are general and basic practices we can begin to implement prior to going deeper into those specifics. Making the transition from being concerned to a position of readiness requires action. Being prepared is often considered an art form of action and requires an in-depth evaluation of our specific conditions and environment. Artistic levels of preparedness are best accomplished with a degree of passion and enthusiasm. Preparedness can be described as "resourceful adaptation", ... when coupled with motivating factors better defines our decision to change the odds for survival in our favor. This can often summarize our reasons to live beyond the moment. Being prepared starts here.

Things to consider doing

1

Finding motivation Motivation 1

For many survival minded enthusiasts, ... taking action with preparedness often starts as a result of having experienced some sort of catalysts which inevitably changes our lives and how we think or feel. Perhaps it was an unbelievable story we heard or something we read in one of those alternative news feeds or websites. Maybe it was an accumulation of exposure to an array of disturbing information or something a trusted friend showed us. We live in a changing world where information is readily available, ... flowing freely to those with access and curiosity, ... at least for now. Paying closer attention to this information with an open mind has been known to spark higher levels of curiosity or fascination for survival minded enthusiasts. Many people have become preppers as a result of performing an in-depth degree of research with the aim of satisfying their curiosity. Other motivating catalysts are simply the result of evident changes and require our undivided attention or action. Even the current political movements and conditions in the U. S. have caused people to become concerned enough to begin preparing for an uncertain future. For others, ... it is simply a unique and special feeling which tells us that things are about to change or get ugly. This has a tendency to encourage a desire to get in the ready position. To keep a watchful eye open and pay closer attention to the potentials for disaster.

P2S has listed within the resource page an array of interesting links for curious subject matter with the intent of providing potentials and situations for consideration. The resources listed represent a small amount of hidden truths regarding the world around us which can provide a reasonable idea as to where we might be headed as a nation and a species. Such information has been known to draw concern, fear and anger from many new comers when found to be truthful. A reasonable amount of due diligence and research is required in order to determine how any of this information makes us feel and what actions we may take as a result. This is the time to consider the potentials of truth in everything we expose ourselves to. Just in case our aim is to initiate measures for preparedness. Getting it wrong could cost us our lives.

Is it possible to live our lives without being effected by unbelievable news, events and situations? Sure!!! but not forever. History depicts that the course of civilized living is cyclic and is subject to periodic changes, .... often extreme in nature. This means that sooner or later something terrible will inevitably happen. How we address these potentials is largely associated with our desires to live beyond these moments in history. Do we sit on our hands and lay down in surrender or, .... do we take precautionary measures to fight the odds against us? This is not a gloom and doom level of reaction, ... but self preservation at it's finest.

Taking the initiative to be prepared is often the result of a new mindset. A new way of thinking. Are we survivors? What motivates us to live? Do we relinquish our quality of live and longevity to others who posture for control? Absolutely not!!! Exposing ourselves to real world truths and suppressed knowledge with an open mind will motivate and cause a proactive endeavor to change an outcome for the better. This is often the beginning for many survival minded enthusiasts. Action and planning are born from the exposure of potential calamities in conjunction with the desire to live. What is our motivation? What drives us? How do we harness our motivation? Do we have a desire to live or do we care less for ourselves and others. There may come a time and day when these questions must be answered by each one of us. No time like the present to change the odds in our favor. Get started!!!

Gathering useful information Gather info

When motivated and stimulated appropriately an increase for the desire to know more arises within us and develops into more of a need than curiosity alone. Once we have acquired a new mind set and have made the decision to be better prepared the next set of actions are prudent for the highest degree of success. Gathering applicable information and date which can either impair our efforts or assist us in our quest is vital and an integral part of succeeding. To be better prepared, ... we will need to have a better understanding for what concerns us. This involves a degree of research and education. Common concerns for survival minded enthusiasts encompass the typical list of disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, tidal waves, asteroid strikes, nuclear detonation and more. Advanced or extended levels of preparedness include other potentially unfortunate situations such as carjackings, identity theft, home invasions, chemical emergencies and growing older as well. A plan of action can be created for many situations. It starts with gathering information.

For localized and regional situations

(Large scale disasters and emergencies expected to cause personal impact)

.

Regional observations »

Having greater knowledge for the regions where we live and work is advantageous for navigating through inherent obstacles and potential difficulties. Regional observations encompass not only geographical obstructions but cultural and infrastructural intricacies as well. Applicable information frequently sought out by survival minded enthusiasts is that which has the potential to interfere with or impair our aim of sheltering in place or evacuating successfully. Typical concerns are categorized as follows:

.

Road ways and public transportation

During times of chaos and disruption it is important to have a clear understanding as to what the road conditions may be. For those who reside in heavily populated areas it is reasonable to expect that roads may be impassable due to excessive amounts of people trying to get out of town. Most all metropolitan areas will experience unfortunate situations due to congestion and gridlock making it difficult at best to get out of the region in a safe amount of time. If evacuating is necessary than be the first to leave. Staying alert to conditions and situations in the area will offer an opportunity to get a jump ahead of others. It is always a good idea to scout out various off road trails and alternate methods for leaving an area of danger. Depending upon public transportation leaves us vulnerable to a great many obstacles. Be aware that these systems may fail or stop running without advanced warning, .... just because.

.

Alternate paths and methods of travel

Having alternate paths and methods of evacuating diversifies the options which inevitably provides an increase of odds for succeeding. Taking into consideration that when bugging out is necessary and becomes a priority it is best to take every precaution to make sure nothing gets in our way of completing this task. This is a form of acting outside the lines and boundaries of corralled behavior. It simply means that following others may not be the safest course of action. The use of off road trails, forestry roads etc. are all potential routes for leaving an area and should be considered.

Just the same consideration applies for methods of travel. Trucks and SUV's are the first choice as they are often planned for as the vehicle to carry all those survival goods. However, ... there may come situations where alternate forms of travel will become necessary in order to complete the task of evacuating. For those who reside in largely populated metropolitan regions it can be an advantage to utilize motorcycles or bicycles with small tow trailers. Other survival minded enthusiasts opt in the the use of horses and buggies while others plan to hike to safer locations. Some preppers are known to be a little more exotic or possess a higher measure of resources and plan to fly out of danger using various forms of aircraft or even hot air balloons.

.

Water ways, rivers, streams & lakes

Rivers, streams, and lakes are all characteristics of many populated regions. It is important to take into consideration of their advantages and disadvantages. Water plays a critical roll in the need for survival. Most all forms of life here on Earth require water for the continuance of their existence. Many disastrous situations can leave us displaced to areas without the knowledge of where the water might be. Keeping a map of scouted locations for water is highly recommended, ... especially along routes of evacuation and travel.

In addition to accounting for daily water requirements it is also important to understand the various roads and barriers which run over or through various water ways. Some disastrous situations involve the destruction of bridges, levees and dams which can hinder evacuation routes. Many people have are less attentive as to just how many roads leaving their cities and towns utilize a bridge to pass over water while leaving a region. Water ways can also be considered as part of an evacuation route for those with boats and rafts, ... just in case it is the only option remaining.

A final note on water ways brings forth to expose the potentials of flash flooding and excessive debris flow, ... depending upon the nature of the disaster or calamity. Water commonly settles at low geographical areas which can be an advantage or a disadvantage depending on the need. There are times to seek out water and times to avoid it. A balance between both is advantageous.

.

Coastal tidal conditions

People who reside along coastal regions are more likely to be aware of dangerous conditions than those who live just 10 miles away. Tsunami and extreme tidal waves as well as hurricane force winds are true threats for these regions.

Tsunami waves can travel inland up to 10 miles and carry a great deal of material and debris along with it. The ocean salt water can destroy crops and contaminate drinking water reservoirs. Over 200,000 people have died in tsunami waves in the last decade. This is mostly due to a lack of understanding and an appropriate plan of action. Coastal regions are also susceptible to hurricane type weather conditions which can displace communities and destroy routes and methods of evacuation. Hurricanes have been known to claim thousands of lives throughout history. Living anywhere near a coastal region should trigger measures of observation and draw concern for the likelihood of specific conditions to arise which are directly associated with these regions.

Making note for areas of higher ground and the potential for evacuating to those areas is of great importance. Understanding the available warning systems and acting upon them will save lives.

.

Population / quantity and types of people

Gathering applicable information extends to having an understanding for regional population quantities and the social levels of development around us. These are obstacles which when taken into consideration can be integrated into a plan of action designed to avoid unwanted attributes associated with people in general. Living in rural settings does not present much of a concern, ... unless we tend to evacuate to those locations. Then it is impotent to make friends fast or keep a reasonable distance , ... as rural dwellers can be unexpectedly brutal while displaying generosity and compassion.

City dwellers however have enough to be concerned with when it comes to ascertaining potential dangers associated with largely populated areas and the diversity of people within those regions. Assessing routes for evacuation typically include avoiding particular areas known to be of higher risk. They also include a plan with several ways out of the city limits, ... which is also dependent upon the specific situation. When gathering information at this level it is important make note of various social intricacies for each district area just in case this information becomes advantageous to act upon one way or another. Mass amounts of people have a tendency to corral one another and can detour individual plans from succeeding.

.

Industry types and their locations

Rational decisions are very often made from a greater knowledge base of relative information allowing us a higher degree of success. During our observational research and while gathering local information it will be prudent to know just where the industries are located and what they are working with. As we look around our personal region we need to ask ourselves, ... are we in the radius of danger? What type of PPE, (personal protection equipment), do we have for a local disaster if or when it occurs. Does the existence of dangerous industries near our location change evacuation plans and routes? The answers for each of us is very specific which when researched appropriately will save lives.

.

Fault lines / Volcanic activity / Naturally occurring / etc.

Additional elements known to present risk and danger to local and regional residents are those associated with naturally occurring and geological events. These types of events can be spontaneous often cutting off evacuation routes and avenues of travel which should be expected as normal. These are situations which can occur without advanced notice and often favor actions associated with hunkering down and sheltering in place. The type of events which can be considered as naturally occurring are earthquakes, volcanic activity, flash flooding, landslides and extreme rainfall. Relative and local information for these types of events can be found within key organizations such as the USGS and NOAA. Possessing information for our immediate areas can make the difference between success and failure.

.

Common wind speeds and directions

Having a fairly good understanding of inherent local wind speeds and directions can be a huge advantage when avoiding dangers which can be carried by natural conditions. The effects from many disasters and calamities are often those which eject and spew harmful materials and elements which can present a serious threat to life nearby. Events as such are those associated with volcanic activity, nuclear detonations or relative devices of war. Additional conditions which can arise are those related to industrial accidents which is all the more important to monitor local activity of industry types. Being in the path of many dangerous conditions is something that can be decrease when equipped with relative information. Wind speed and direction is without a doubt relative to many disastrous conditions known to effect the quality and longevity for life forms on Earth. Getting out of the way of destruction will offer an increase for chances to survive. Wind speeds and direction as well as the movement of water are relative and can be mapped or configured into a plan for avoidance.

.

Location of potential resources and supply houses

Most people know where their local stores and supply house are. It can be an advantage to expect that these establishments may be inundated during times of emergencies and chaos. Those who did not prepare accordingly for these moments will benefit from having additional knowledge for alternate locations of supplies. Many survival minded enthusiasts tend to make note of secondary stores and supply houses such as establishments and warehouses which cater to farms, ranches, pets and exotic or forign purposes. Sporting good stores often carry camping foods such as freeze dried and dehydrated packages which are less likely to deteriorate quickly. Health food stores have plenty on their shelves to accommodate for an array of requirements known to be useful in disastrous conditions. Fueling stations are similar as they too may be locations of chaos and disruption. For those with a siphon hose, ... knowing where those industrial yards and motor pools are can be a life saving potential to get the resource we need to evacuate a region safely with less disruption or obstacles.

.

For global and non localized situations

(Large scale disasters and emergencies occurring in distant lands)

.

Global observations / Non localized »

Keeping a watchful eye out for situations occurring around the globe can be tedious and uninteresting at times, ... unless the aim is to be ready for anything at any time. There are many who feel that it is unlikely to be effected by a disaster occurring on the other side of the world or from a distant land and are uninterested in being prepared. This type of ideology is not conducive for a survival minded enthusiast. Many others tend to favor the likelihood for the potential of an extinction level event and do not feel it is worth attempting to survive. Why make that assumption? Especially if others count on us to lead with encouragement and hope. There are many potential dangers we can face while living out our lives. To be prepared is to cause comfort with higher levels of confidence for having a wider selection of solutions for just about any situation.

Taking action Action 1

Survival minded enthusiasts commonly agree that taking action is the most important step in being prepared. Being informed and having unique knowledge for the things that can happen over a life time should prompt a higher degree of motivation. Educating and exposing ourselves to those things typically causes a deeper rooted desire to act in such a way which encourages and supports the increasing chances for surviving. Knowledge without action is empty and frivolous. Taking action coupled with the assistance from a higher power has been proven to increase the odds of surviving most any disaster or calamity. Understanding the difference between only talking about it and taking action are two completely different worlds of reality.

Putting information to good use »

.

Risk assessment

Once an appropriate amount of applicable information has been gathered the time comes to put it into a form of action which can be applied with the aim of defining our priorities. Preparing for every potential contingency takes time and resources. Unless we are abundant with purchasing power and resources it is best to start with those subject matters which present the highest degree of risk for our immediate environment. As we advance and progress with the understanding for greater risks so does our desire to prepare for them accordingly. Preparation is an on going activity with a catalyst for starting point that is best addressed by assessing immediate risks first. Preparation is born from risk assessment. Drafting a personal P.O.A. (plan of action), means to assess dangers. What we do with that information is equally important.

.

Gather materials and supplies

Once a decision has been made to be better prepared there comes a time shortly after when investing in materials and supplies becomes a desired necessity. Gaining the appropriate materials and supplies can address a multitude of things or we can focus on what can provide us an advantage for defending against immediate risks. Advanced levels of preparedness involve a culmination of goods and training that provide a higher degree of confidence in being prepared for just about anything. This means to account for geological or natural situations and for those which are man made or intentional events as well. General preparedness however does include an array of valuable materials and supplies known to be conducive for surviving a great deal of calamities and disastrous situations. These are items such as non perishable portable foods, water and filtration methods, first aid and medical kits, measures for security, defensive tools and devices, communication and monitoring equipment, maps, various articles of clothing etc. General preparedness is typically intended to sustain a fluctuating amount of people for a short duration of time. The length of time is contingent upon the amount of goods kept. This level of preparedness requires an understanding in basic skills for reading maps, radio chatter from emergency services and defensive deterrents or factors of intimidation. Most every disaster plan of action begins at a general level of preparedness. Advanced measures include a level of on going training which is intended to extend lives beyond our cashe of materials and supplies. To become more self reliant and create our own Eco system conducive for survival.

.

Education and training

An amount of education and training is not only advantageous but necessary for understanding the best course of action to take in defense of many disastrous situations. It is a method by which we increase the odds of surviving by knowing what to do during times of duress and uncertainty. The educational process for being prepared starts with gaining new knowledge which will be applicable for addressing aspects revealed during our risk assessment. Whatever those risks may be, ... it will be prudent to invest a little time in knowing everything we can about the specifics. Having an array of materials, supplies and gear is nice but may not be as useful if the end users are not educated or trained in using them for full their potential.

One such example applies to the use of fire arms. Despite ongoing controversies over the ownership of fire arms, ... when a situation arises that requires defensive measures and a fire arm is the only option, ... training and education may make the difference between success and ultimate failure. A proper fire arms course will instruct students on the use of fire arms, hitting the target without missing, clearing type 1,2 & 3 jams which is important in the middle of a gun fight as well as safe operating techniques. It will induce higher levels of confidence which can offer that split second of reaction time in our favor. Many courses teach students to draw from a holstered position in just a few seconds but the hope is to avoid pointing in on a target and rely more on the intimidation of a side arm being present. This is considered as an optical deterrent known to be effective in changing an assailants mind. In many cases, ... the bad guy will choose to walk away. In other cases, .... they will force the fight so being ready at a moments notice is everything.

Other types of education and training surround the concept of living off the land. This is a higher level of preparedness intended to be more self reliant for when the food and supplies run out. To know how to build a fire, make shelters, trap food and locate drinking water may save our life when the duration of such calamities are longer than expected.

Education and training also extends into discovering how things work, ... just in case we stumble upon a machine or apparatus that can be used to our advantage. Knowing how to operate particular vehicles when forced to improvise is a huge advantage. Medical training and other skills such as cooking or making something of value will also prove to be an advantage. Having little or no useful skills and training will ultimately force others to take care of us when times are already hard enough. Education and training is a serious contribution known to be conducive for extending the chances of success for surviving a great deal of situations.

.

Associates & alignment with others

Many people prefer to operate alone during times of chaos and disruption as this allows them a better chance to avoid unwanted or useless conditions to deal with. This is a position that offers a few advantages but may not be popular with family and friends, ... as they may be disregarded or left behind to fend for themselves. It is often said that it takes a unique individual to succeed at living for extended periods of time without the help or presence of family, friends or government assistance. Having to take care of only ourselves is less cumbersome and easier to accomplish. However, ... not everyone has the same opinion, luxury or opportunity. The real world we live in often consists of others around us who are in need of assistance such as with children, the elder and even pets. With that understanding it may become the best course of action to assure the safety and well being of the group by teaming up together with one common goal. Not everyone within a group is chosen and can become an anchor if left alone to do as they please. Some are along as family or neighbors and are not educated or trained in anything useful. It will become necessary to initiate training for those individuals.

This is why we make alignments with skilled survival minded enthusiasts ahead of time in the hope of balancing the group dynamics. To welcome and associate with like minded people will be a huge advantage when the time comes to survive. Power in numbers is not always true but the right people will make or break our efforts to succeed.

.

Subject specific

Many survival minded enthusiasts go deeper with their efforts to be prepared for a number of disastrous contingencies. This involves a degree of education, training and action geared to address specific and unique situations. For example; If the region in which we reside contains factories and distribution hubs which deal in dangerous and volatile chemicals than it is prudent to extend our general level of preparedness to cover specifics associated with potential accidents. That might entail having chemical suits and respirators on hand and ready to use if necessary. The same concept applies to areas known for producing nuclear power or for those who live in regions suspected as being a high value target for nuclear detonation. Such conditions validate the need and benefits of having radiation treatment equipment, (Potassium iodide, level 3 suits and burn treatment gel).

Other examples can be considered for people who live and work in areas known for volcanic or earthquake activity who would benefit from the installation of an enclosed reinforced shelter of sorts.

The specifics are endless with a vast array of goods and equipment known to be an advantage for such events. Other less obvious specifics are related to being prepared for situations of danger that can occur in metropolitan city areas such as with home invasions, car jacking and abduction or kidnappings. Measures and deterrents are available to discourage or foil an attempt at such disastrous crimes. Being prepared is not limited to what we typically consider disasters or global events. Anything that can endanger or end the lives of others can quickly turn into a disaster. This is most often a mater of perspective, .... especially if it effects us personally.

Develop a plan P.O.A. (Plan of action) »

.

Basic considerations for a common plan of action

Once we have completed a degree of gathering useful information it is time to put it all together with the intent of creating a well balanced plan of action. From the information gathered it is likely that we can ascertain risks, obstacles & threats to be addressed accordingly. We will have the appropriate knowledge to create a plan of action with the intent to increase the odds of surviving an array of disastrous situations.

A plan of action typically has a beginning with no precise ending. It is created with the intent to establish methods and procedures to be used in supporting safe passage and stability through chaotic and disruptive events. It should contain appropriate steps to performed during times of emergencies. To encourage longevity and self preservation when disaster strikes.

It often consists of two branches of action which are conditionally based on a variation of circumstances and situations. The basics are defined by the concept of staying and sheltering in place or leaving an immediate area of danger. Both of these plan types will require a degree of supplies and materials custom configured for our personal situation and needs. Typical questions and concerns to be addressed are those such as the following:

Are we alone?, ... how many others will we be accounting for?, ... do we have pets?, ... where is the nearest water resource?, ... what kind of energy will we rely upon?,... how much and what type of food shall we keep?, ... How do we defend ourselves?, ... where do we go when leaving is the only option? Additional questions to be answered might cover aspects associated with the size of town or city we are in which has an impact on the consideration of how others react in times of chaos and disruption. Lets not forget about measures for hygiene, ... infection control and mental health concerns for others around us. Understanding various personality traits is a huge component. These conditions can make or break even the most grand efforts to succeed.

.

Bugging out

Developing a plan of action should include aspects associated with evacuation or leaving the immediate area. Knowing where our last tank of fuel will take us is huge on the list of things to pay close attention to. Heavy traffic, congestion and road closures are unfortunate circumstances known to impair efforts to bug out and should be considered with alternative measures as a part of the plan of action. Delays in evacuating can become costly with the potential to end poorly. If we can not get to our destination than we may be subject to surviving where ever we end up. This type of situation can have disastrous consequences in itself. Spontaneity or uncertainty is not a favored element of an action plan. This can leave us subject to the uncertainties associated with unfortunate places and destructive people. Expecting that most people will behave poorly in these situations would be advantageous.

A reasonable plan of action for bugging out will take into consideration our methods of travel and routes we will take to get to our designated safe place. It will also make assurances for every aspect associated with the journey. It is better to always have the fuel to get the job done than to rely on fueling stations to be available or without disruption and chaos. It is best to have grab bags and supplies which can easily be taken along at a moments notice. Prior communications or understanding between ourselves and those we intend to meet up with is equally important. We want to avoid the act of scrambling for loved ones in excess as our intent should be to expedite getting to the safe place locations. Our loved ones and alliances should already know where those locations are and should be expected that they will get there as accordingly planned.

It is also prudent to consider storage and cashes of various items along the traveling routes, ... just in case. Other reasonable aspects associated with bugging out is to have a clear understanding for the destination or safe place. Having more than one is an advantage. It is important to take into consideration the length of time we expect to remain at the safe place location is critical to survival. Having a back up plan to relocate is a part of an extended plan of action.

Other forms of bugging out include various methods of travel such as by boat, plane, bicycle or on foot. Each form of transportation has its advantageous and disadvantageous which should be configured into a plan of action. These various forms of transportation are all contingent upon specific conditions and do not serve as a solution for every disastrous situation. For instance, ... a regional disaster encompassing a large geographical area may be inescapable on foot or with a bicycle. Areas prone to flooding may give reason to climb to higher ground, ... especially if the roads are washed out and vehicles become useless for traveling. Leaving the area in an aircraft during volcanic eruptions presents factors of heavy risk as planes and helicopters don't perform well in such conditions. Those who work or reside in coastal regions are more likely to create a plan of action that would consider attributes associated with tidal waves and tsunamis over the chances of being caught in a tornado or severe desert related droughts. On the flip side, ... droughts and dry weather are a bigger concern for those who live in regions with less rainfall. These people are less concerned with preparing for a tidal wave than they are with having plenty of drinking water. Making a plan of action should be conditionally specific yet include general best practices and aspects associated with sheltering in place or evacuating during an event.

An evacuation plan of action should also contain measures of defense. These measures should account for the absolute worst behavior possible from others. History depicts that people can be brutal and spontaneously dangerous. Despite having a degree of empathy or compassion for others, ... people can still take what we have by force out of desperation when times are chaotic and uncertain. Defensive measures can be applied for self defense or for those who appear to be in need of rescuing from would be assailants and undesirables. Defensive measures include but are not limited to having an ability to profile others and our immediate surroundings as well as possessing an array of deterrents. Some extreme survival minded enthusiasts have gone as far as creating vehicles known to be exclusively intimidating. Mounting a cannon or 50 caliber machine gun on the top of a vehicle would certainly have an impact on those intending on taking our goods. They might think twice before initiating such an attempt. The focus or aim is to prevent being taken off guard with a malicious road block or deceptive role-players. It only takes one mistake to end our journey for survival.

When bugging out and evacuating, ... it is important to take along smaller versions of what we typically need when life is normal and routine. This concept should account for food, water, daily medications, pet food, communications etc. An evacuation plan is better when these necessities are along the routes of travel or stored at the safe place destinations.

.

.

Hunkering down (sheltering in place)

Hunkering down and sheltering in place is the foremost popular decision made by people during a disaster. It is most often due to the level of comfort we feel when we hide out and lock the doors. It is important to keep in mind that this sort of comfort level can impair critical decision making when disaster strikes. It is often those first few minutes of deciding which may determine success or failure for surviving. During those precious few minutes an abundance of information is racing through our minds as we take it in and attempt to process it all for the best possible outcome. How do we know if evacuation is the best action to take? How can we be certain that sheltering in place is best? Should we surrender our lives to the hands of those who are deciding for us or take the initiative ourselves? This is where being attentive and aware is beneficial. When we have a better understanding as to our surrounding and environment we are better equipped to make those kind of decisions for ourselves. Relying upon others presents additional risk and uncertainty. Those who are physically or mentally challenged should develop strong alliances with friends and neighbors. Those with the means to be self reliant should help their neighbors.

If the decision has been made to shelter in place it is not always done so in the comfort of our homes. That is most likely the least favorable position to be in as it leaves us without those things we stored up at home, .... unless we were smart enough to keep a bug out bag in the back seat of our vehicle. Some survival minded enthusiasts keep a cashe of goods stored at work, ... just in case this scenario plays out. It is better to be prepared a little than not at all.

Assuming we made it home and have decided to shelter in place, ... a number of measures similar to those considered for evacuation should be considered. Similarities include but are not limited to having ample supplies of food, water and fuel for heating and cooking. It is prudent to take into consideration that cooking food or using firewood may draw unwanted attention from those who failed to make preparations. It will be smarter to assume that a percentage of those people will resort to the use of force to take what we have in order to survive. Hunkering down and sheltering in place most certainly has its degree of vulnerabilities and dangers. Being discrete is an advantage. Having enough supplies for a few weeks will become most valuable if the situation extends longer than expected. Long term situations require additional action and skills for when those supplies run out. Sheltering in place is far more effective in rural settings than it is for those who reside within a city boundary or metropolitan area.

Once again, ... defensive measures and deterrents are of great use for those who have made the decision to stay at home during a disaster. This is when alliances are most helpful. That is why survival minded enthusiasts tend to stock up on enough supplies to accommodate for additional personal. Strength in numbers is advantageous.

Advantages of sheltering at home vs bugging out is having the convenience of many supplies and a level of comfort which is conducive for clearer thinking. Despite the potential chaos, ... we tend to think better on our feet than during times when we are displaced or on the road of uncertainty. We are typically limited during evacuations which presents higher levels of vulnerability and risk.

Our homes and shelter should contain measures for capturing and cleaning water, freeze dried and or dehydrated foods as canned foods will be consumed first due having a shorter expiration period. Gardens are also an advantage if the space is available. Some survival minded enthusiasts have been known to grow potatoes in their rain gutters, .... which can be a perfect catch all for rain water. Other supplies should include measures to fight off sickness and infection as well as having air scrubbers or filtration systems in case of contaminated air. Cooking and heating fuels can be extracted from a number of materials such as fireplace logs, alcohol fuels made from a distillation unit for those who understand how to build such a device. Extracting burnable fuels from firewood to run generators is called "wood gasification" which can be built at home. A large fresnel lens, (flat TV screen material), can boil water in a matter of minutes for those resourceful survivalists. Solar panels are also at the top of the list for energy devices. The list of preparations are almost endless. Hunkering down and sheltering in place can be a smarter move so as to avoid the chaos of evacuating to an unknown region. Considering both options is the best course of action if the aim is to place higher confidence in surviving the vast array of potential disasters and calamities for which we can be exposed to.

Advanced and expanded preparations »

Many survival minded enthusiasts do not limit themselves to a one plan fits all kind of ideology. Having a plan of action applies to a great many situations known to cause harm or place lives in danger. Other situations such as carjackings, home invasions, abductions, identity theft and more can all have an applicable plan of action created to encourage an advantage for persevering through desperate moments. The highest levels of preparedness allow us to completely be self reliant in most all situations. To perform survival skills, tactics and measures with the utmost confidence while encouraging those around us. To lead with a positive attitude and to encourage life, growth and pursuit of happiness following disastrous situations. To display that which can be assimilated by others as righteous and to display good actions to follow. This is a level that requires the highest degree of education, training and little of something more. An intuition that seems to evade so many others. Not everyone is equipped with the same degree of intellect or insight. Those who will be honest with themselves and realize they are falling short of these attributes will benefit from aligning with gifted survival minded enthusiasts. Make some friends and live beyond the moment.
