Regardless of our hopeful endeavors, ... disasters and accidents will continue to occur resulting in the need for people to initiate measures of preparation and self preservation. The need to protect ourselves from further harm is an instinct, ... just as it is when pulling our hand from the fire.  The desire to live beyond the effects of a calamity is considered normal and equally instinctive.

Even wild animals have an instinct to survive.

The will to survive often drives many people into higher levels of awareness prompting a desire to be prepared for such calamities and disasters. It is in our reaction to these feelings of self preservation that it becomes an urgent need to act with the aim of surviving.

Disasters defined

The definition or impression of the word disaster is typically thought of as a calamity or event which effects human, animal or plant life through natural or man made circumstances. Disasters are however not limited to such events. As humans we are subject to a larger array of experiences that can often be thought of as disastrous. In most cases, ... the concept of a disaster is defined by the impact the circumstances have for each one of us resulting from any type or variation of calamity. It is most often a matter of personal opinion.

.

.

Naturally occurring disasters

Natural disasters are defined as a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth. Examples include such events as floods, hurricanes, droughts, earthquakes, solar flares, climate changes etc. Disasters are not limited to natural events and can also be triggered by technical mishaps and human error.

.

Technical or human made disasters

Technological types of disasters are defined as events caused or associated with a man made environment where loss of life and or property has occurred. Advancements in technology have resulted in the potential for additional disasters which should be considered. Examples include the release of hazardous materials, long term electrical blackouts, radiological emergencies, nuclear event, explosions, chemical threats and biological weapons. The possibility for disasters to occur are not limited to the previously mentioned. Potentials exist for additional types of disasters that are related to economic conditions and financial distress. This is becoming a global issue.

.

Social type disasters

Economic collapse is one such situation defined as a social disaster resulting in widespread disruption and failure of a national or regional economy. The results of such an event can cause panic, hoarding, famine, hyperinflation,  political upheaval, revolution, and a higher mortality rate. A social disaster can be best defined as a situation or calamity that has devastating effects on societal ways  of live such as civil wars, economic collapse, pandemics etc.

.

Disasters happen

The cause for many disasters can be the result of an accident or an event that has been intentionally triggered. Many disasters, which are caused by a number of factors, are completely out of the control of humanity leaving us to deal with the devastating effects afterwards. We can loose people close to us as well as personal assets and belongings as a result of a disaster. Emergency services can be delayed or nonexistent which leaves us to rely on ourselves or those who have prepared ahead of time. It is for these reason why we prepare. It's a deep rooted feeling that speaks to our subconscious levels of survival. Another statement applicable for preparation might be "in anticipation of ".

People are continually making improvements to society through technological advancements and methods with the aim of reducing accidents and disastrous conditions. We apply safeguards to machinery and processes for the protection of human life and property. Why? , .... because accidents happen as does natural events which can disturb our way of life and cause extreme levels of chaos and disruption as well as injury and death. It is a human instinct and a responsibility to survive. To be a good steward of the life given to us. To work together for the greater good. To continue to live and prosper. That is why we ready ourselves. That is why we prepare.

Results from disasters

Regardless of the types of disasters listed on this website one aspect is most common between them all. The after effects for most disasters often result in social chaos and disorder. Civil unrest, protests and revolutions are considered likely and perhaps inevitable to occur with most large scale situations. Administrations and governments are fully aware of this potential and prepare for the effects accordingly. Many governments have adopted an aggressive posture with it's civilian population in the attempt to maintain a manageable level of order and control during chaotic events.

As populations continue to grow they become significant and large enough to present a threat to itself and the administration. Many people believe it is for that reason which prompt strategic plans for depleting civil liberties and rights with the aim of maintaining order. In the United States for instance, ... where citizens are well armed, ... attempts are periodically made to reduce or eliminate the amount of fire arms owned by citizens. This can be a futile attempt resulting in an uprising or civil type war. It seems that the American people will not be stripped of their rights to bare arms without a fight.

However, other civil liberties are gradually changing without much opposition or awareness by its citizens. With the continual loss of general freedoms it is reasonable to assume that a build up of social unrest can occur within a nations population. This can inevitably lead to increasing levels of opposition prompting clash between citizens and government.

Governments feel it is their duty to protect the people from themselves so they prepare for situations with the aim of gaining control during chaotic situations as is permitted under martial law. Martial law can be used by governments to enforce their rule over the public. This is typically referred to by many people as a "Police State" type environment.

During police state types of environments a widening disconnect between civilians and authorities can cause resentment and mistrust between both sides. Most governments take measures to make sure the balance is in their favor with the aim of preventing citizens from overthrowing the administration.  In some countries, ... these measures are brutally concise and often seen by moralists as cruel and genocide in nature.

In countries where the civilians are well armed it is far more difficult to force control over them. Especially when many of those citizens are well trained ex- military or law enforcement. Performing the math on this type of scenario reveals the potential for a disastrous situation. It is often assumed that nobody wins this sort of game without destroying a nation or two.  Especially if the controlling government resorts to desperate measures to maintain their control.

People can create and allow great potentials for disasters that can change life as we know it on Earth. Research reveals that disasters of any nature or cause are cyclic and reoccurring. Not only with natural type disasters but those which are man made as well. It is only a matter of time before the next one comes along.

In addition to what has been mentioned above are variations of events and emergencies which we may contend with in our lives from time to time. These are calamities and situations which can also become disastrous as well such as with home invasions, carjacking’s, robberies, abductions and more. Most anything can escalate into a disaster when the situation spirals out of control and has not been prepared for adequately.

If governments are planning, ... shouldn’t we?

It is interesting to discover that governments take every possible precaution in their contingency planning and continue to prepare for all sorts of possible disasters. They are storing phenomenal amounts of food, ammo and other resources which are not earmarked for public use. It is not for you!!! What do they know that we don’t?

.

Making a disaster preparedness plan with adequate measures to survive isn't just wise, ... it is a fun and responsible activity as well. Many people do not have a preparedness plan because they are under the impression that their government will provide all the relief supplies, shelter and medical attention they need. To feel more secure and confident in surviving any such calamity it is best to avoid relying on governmental services. In previous disasters government relief efforts responded as fast as they could, yet many people still suffered devastating losses or perished despite galant efforts. They did not get the help they counted on soon enough to make a difference. When it becomes necessary to react quickly relying on ourselves may be the first line of action and defense we have. It is advantageous not to rely on others for rescue. How much of an advantage do we and our families have if we are appropriately prepared?

Consider how secure and confident it will be when we can help others instead of waiting for someone to come and rescue us? It is certainly better to be an asset than a liability. Can we really sit back and do nothing to assist ourselves or others during a disaster? It is typically not in our nature to deny helping others, ... especially when we have the resources. Humans generally come together during an emergency so it is always advantageous to have a plan and provisions for those occasions. The hardest part of disaster preparedness is to go beyond researching and START DOING! .....  Gear up and and have a plan of action to survive the next disaster!!!

.

.

Research is necessary to achieve a better understanding about the potential threats which can drastically effect our lives. Obtaining that information is only half of the equation. The key is to act on what we have learned and move forward into a position of readiness. To create a preparedness plan for you, your family and perhaps a neighborhood. For more information on how to be prepared to survive this site has provided resources and encouragement to aid those seeking that path.
