Increasing the odds to survive a Home Invasion

The description of Home Invasion" can be found under Why be prepared".

Prelude

Home invasions are not natural occurring events. They are thought up and executed by humans. In areas prone to criminal or malicious behavior it is generally accepted that home invasions are more likely to happen resulting in a higher percentage of residents taking precautions. People who live in areas where crime is uncommon or less likely to occur are not as prepared for a home invasion as they should be. Despite where we live we are all susceptible to crimes involving our homes or property. The fact is that most all home invasions can be detoured or prevented through a series of efforts & precautionary measures. Some precautions are mild but obvious with the intent to discourage assailants from proceeding with the invasion or crime. Other measures are extreme and extend far beyond the detouring objective. The most extreme efforts result in a no tolerance policy where initiating a home invasion is not worth the consequences for even the most experienced attackers. In many cases perpetrators have payed with their lives for attempting a home invasion. A situation that is not always avoidable when targeting the wrong home.

The following has been provided with the intent to aid those seeking information related to surviving and preventing a home invasion.

Worth the efforts

Family houseRegardless of where we live our homes are generally considered to be worthy of the highest levels of protection. Our homes are where we typically protect who and what is most important in our lives. A place where we welcome friends and secure our personal things. It is a place where we expect to keep it all of it safe from the threats of robbery and physical assault. The efforts put forth to create an environment worthy of preventing a home invasion may be extreme but worth the investment of time and resources. Levels of preparedness should include but not be limited to the use of physical deterrents, behavioral and psychological tactics, technical equipment and combat training. These are aspects of preparation that can not only aid in escaping such an event but can act as a deterrent and stop it from becoming more than a dirty little thought in the minds of criminals.

Profiling the neighborhood

(assessment of susceptibility). Many survival minded 23360166_SApeople are keen to assess the areas in which they reside. This is taking a proactive approach to better understand the well being, character and ethics of any given neighborhood, ... especially if the area is inherently susceptible to malicious or criminal activity. Talking to and developing relationships with neighbors can be advantageous when seeking allies in crime prevention. It is also another way to better understand your surroundings. Make an effort to discover what crimes are occurring in the area if any and what the details about those crimes might be. This sort of defensive strategy might give a better understanding as to who is executing crimes in the area and how they are doing it. The assessment should include that of local law enforcement as well. A weak, exhausted or despondent police force can indicate poor administrative policies and inadequacies of procedures or concern for the citizens. Criminally minded people learn to take full advantage of those environments often seizing control of an entire area. For regions prone to greater response times from law enforcement it may be necessary to become more self reliant. This is especially true in rural settings where residence are isolated from populated areas absent of neighbors. Thorough profiling should include an assessment of the economic condition of residential inhabitants to determine the desperation or need to engage in crimes of robbery etc. It is advantageous to be observant.

Creating alliances

make-friendsGet involved or start your own neighborhood watch programs and be active to change the neighborhood environment. This is a great way to become familiar with the surrounding neighbors. Try not to be one of those irritating people that makes everyone miserable and angry. This includes the neighbors children and pets as well. Malicious neighbors can often be targeted as well as being excluded from receiving vital information. Knowing more about the people in the area will prove to be an advantage. It is easier to observe and gather information when we are involved or accepted. It is also a good idea to reserve a little mystery about yourself. Be authentic and display integrity so as to be trusted. It is prudent however to exercise a little discretion when offering information. We all have weaknesses and we don’t want to broadcast what those weaknesses are. It is important to stay sharp and attentive to our environment. Pay close attention to strange behavior in and around the neighborhood. A good neighbor will keep a watchful eye for suspicious and malicious behavior and announce it accordingly. Creating alliances is surly advantageous.  It’s a good thing to practice as it implies an added degree of security for the family and home.

.

Discretionary behavior

Drawing unwanted attention to yourself or home can have classified-file-information-folder-resized-600.jpgunfortunate repercussions. Preventative measures should include refraining from excessive display of financial or material status known as flaunting. It is tougher for criminals to justify initiating a home invasion when the yield or prize is less than the effort or consequences. Crime rate statistics depict that placing your riches and grandeur out for all to see can have a luring attraction for would be thieves. Eliminating the interest will decrease the odds of  becoming a victim of a home invasion.

Technical advantages

Night-Vision-Surveillance-System-Miami

Surveillance systems are useful for keeping an eye out for intruders however we can not always sit in front of a display monitor waiting for an intruder. There are security systems that can detect and announce movement as an alarm feature but come at a cost. Night vision is an added technical advantage for camera systems. Other technical advantages can be had with grounds and perimeter sensors, DB or sound sensitive detection units, automated vocal warning and response systems for intruders, high fire wall security systems with auto dial and more. Some security enthusiasts go as far as to install traps and snares with the aim of capturing perpetrators in the midst of trespassing. Simple motion activated lights around the home has a huge advantage in deterring criminal activity. Implementing a little technology around the property can give the occupants a few moments to react in defense of their home. It is often those few moments of time that makes the difference between becoming a victim or dominating the assailants. Some simple tactics and efforts include nothing more than having a few stickers on the windows which may read "Protected by Guard dog" or "AR15". Lets not forget the best deterrent. Having the real thing. A couple of big  dogs and an assault weapon!!!

.

.

The art of illusion

Creating an Illusion is often half the battle.  Giving the appearances of having a tumblr_static_magicbirnehigh security home which is being monitored as well as defended can make all the difference in the world when preventing a home invasion.  For those who are short on funds fake cameras have a profound effect on decisions made by criminally inclined people. Security alarm system signage such as from "ADT" or "Wells Fargo" placed around the home works great as well. Pretending to have a few dogs in the home is also a great way to prevent a home invasion.  A recording of a couple of dogs barking is a great illusion when connected to those motion detection lights. Projecting the appearance of having many residence in the home is also part of the art. Multiple vehicles or other deterrents in front of the house is practicing that illusion. Playing music from the garage or backyard adds a little confusion to the exterior of the home thus interfering with a well executed plan to invade the home.

Tactical plans

should-you-have-a-replacement-planNo one knows our own homes better than ourselves therefore we have an advantage when creating a defensive plan. Make sure your windows and doors are lockable. Make an attempt to break in yourself. Note the vulnerabilities and correct them. Have a place to hide if that is the only option. Know what in your home can be used as a weapon when taking defensive action or creating a diversion. Have a code word that is only shared between family members. If a home is to be equipped with fire arms be sure to practice acquisition and deployment tactics. Getting trained with a hand gun at facilities such as "Front Sight" in the state of Nevada helps remove any doubt in accuracy or confidence in handling a fire arm. It helps to be in good physical condition so as to become a challenge in a combat opportunity. Be sure to use 911 quickly. Once 911 has been dialed the phone can hit the floor as the line remains open. Leave the phone off the hook. The operator can usually hear the commotion and determine that help is needed at your address.

Immediate defensive action

This is where the situation escalates from having ample Defending-Your-Castle-color-swap-e1389721919770warning to taking action. At this point physical reaction is required in order to retain your freedom and or security. Many people try to avoid the use of fire arms and entertain the use of alternate forms of home defense methods.

Defensive arts like Krav-maga and other forms of hand to hand physical combat are great to use when skilled enough to see the opportunity as it comes. An explosive and quick reaction may be the deciding factor for surviving this event. If your home invasion is performed by people who are smart and quick to have profiled you as a physical threat there is a very good chance they will attempt to remove you from the equation first. Do not posture but be a surprise. You may only get one chance.

The use of fire arms in defense of family and home are not without encouragement.  Decent training will provide highly reactive skills and a familiarity with fire arms that becomes instinctive when applied to your home defense plan. Note this: Safety is emphasized and highly rated at most all quality training facilities so as to prevent accidental or careless discharging of your fire arms. Avoid training programs that lack this feature. The good training you can receive will teach and drill you to quickly load and unload your fire arm when the time comes to do so, .... just in case you are uncomfortable with leaving it stored as a loaded weapon. Schools like Front Sight promote a 2.5 second time frame to land a round into the thoracic cavity, (chest) from a holstered position.  Remember this: Always be safe. Watch where your muzzle is pointed and don’t stash your fire arms in obvious locations. Not only can little hands discover the weapon but your home invaders can find it too. Special furniture or shelving can hide a fire arm in close proximity to where you hang out in the home. If  forced to shoot try to wound first with the intent to stop further progress of the home invasion. Killing someone changes the game of life forever.

Exceptions to the rules do exist. During an apocalyptic large scale event all bets are off. Most people feel it to be much easier to “do what it takes” when defending their home when civil protection may be non-existent. Successful home invasions are largely reliant on the element of surprise. Don’t be caught off guard. Be ready. Home invasions can be predicable where as they have but just a few ways they can end. Either the home owner wins or the invaders do. No matter how it ends it won’t be pretty. The good news is that you do not have to store a ton of resources like food and water to prepare for a home invasion. They generally don’t extend beyond the resources you already have in the home.

Home defense during and after a disastrous event

Home defense during  2363c-natural_disastersdisastrous events has variables to consider. Despite the need to protect our family and homes, remaining in the house may not be a viable option due to the nature of the disaster that is occurring at the time. If the time has come to vacate the area, (Bugging out), defending the home from a robbery becomes quite difficult but not impossible. Be sure before leaving the home that all the deterrents have been turned on or activated. If a chance exists to return to the home the recording and camera systems can tell the story as to what happened when the home was unoccupied.  If you feel it is safe to hunker down and stay in your home than be sure you have enough resources like food and water to get past the duration of the disaster. Governmental statistic say we should keep at least 3 to 5 days of supplies in our home. Be attentive to so called officials coming to the door asking to enter. It is important to understand that this is the time when the criminally minded are out in force. Be cautious of trusting perpetrators in disguise. During and following most all disasters many criminally minded people peruse neighborhoods expecting opportunities. These are moments when scavenging occurs,... and often when home owners or residence are near by. These are chaotic situations that require attentive behavior. People are not rational and often become savages during times of chaos and unrest. Many disastrous events have a short life span which is anticipated by most people. Heightened levels of security should not be necessary for prolonged periods of time as the event should dissipate as it comes to an end soon enough.  If not, ... it pays to have prepared for the long haul.

Bugging out

If you are forced to bug out and leave your home don't let it be a surprise. Are-You-Bugging-In-Or-Bugging-OuttextDo not let a bug out scenario cause panic. Have a bug out plan before you need it. Know where you're running to and how you are getting there if possible. It is important to know how far you can go on the fuel you have remaining in your vehicle. Avoid using public transportation or congested freeways as they may present more of an added burden than its worth. Assume the following: Fueling stations, banks, stores etc may not be open for your business. Many owners of these types of businesses have disaster plans in place and those plans do not accommodate for the needs of the general public. They do however plan to guard their establishments with lethal and deadly force if need be.
