Prelude

Surviving a power outage or blackout means to ensure and maintain the continuation of the statuesque without compromising upright and moral values in the midst of chaos. For most people living in a modern culture, ... which utilizes electrical power, ... a blackout or outage is nothing more than an inconvenience. n This is certainly not true for everyone however. Many people not only become highly reliant upon electrical power but experience a degree of confusion when the power is unexpectedly and abruptly turned off. Power outages can escalate to a more severe level as days without power continue. Those who are totally unprepared at this point will undoubtedly set out to accommodated needs of the family by hunting provisions, ... a very natural instinct. Extreme scenarios depict that measures of self reliance must be preformed to adequately survive this level of dependency without power. As is mentioned in the description of power outages & blackouts the severity associated with the loss of electrical power can vary and has consequences for each level. The good news is, ... this sort of calamity can be prepared for with the aim of avoiding the nasty attributes associated with chaos and disruption.

Note

Levels of dependency for electrical power vary from one person to the next, ... simply meaning that the amount of electrical power we use for routine daily life is directly proportional to the consequences during times when it is unavailable. The less we depend upon electricity the easier it is to cope during calamities involving the loss of this resource. For that reason potential solutions have been choreographed in such a way so as to be applicable for stages of dependency and duration of loss.

Short duration

.

For most people, ... a power outage presents nothing more than an inconvenience with a little excitement added. Perhaps a party or two ignites during a short term outage with the expectation that all will be well within a few hours. The effects of a short term power outage can vary depending upon the time of day or night which creates separate consequences to be prepared for. When electrical power is lost during day light hours and is assumed to recover within a short amount of time, best and safe practices depict that slowing down can be a virtue. Assume that it may result in schools letting out early and market places to close doors until such a time when power is restored. In fact, ... it may be prudent to assume that many of the places we frequent during the normal working hours may be closed as a security measure. This is certainly not a time to panic and can be taken advantage of by listening to the radio or making a call to the local utility company to determine the expected duration of the outage so as to react accordingly. Without some sort of useful information it will be difficult to know just how long the outage will go for. This is a time for investigating and compilation which will tell us what actions can be taken next. If the local utility service company indicates a specific time frame for restoration than it is not as important to escalate measures to the next stages of action. Especially if the expected duration will not exceed a few hours.

With that being said it is important to take into consideration that many people are not comfortable with the loss of electrical power, ... even for a few hours, ... as their lives may be far more dependent upon electricity than most people. Some of these people include but are not limited to the elderly, physical and mentally impaired and of course the newer generation of teenagers. Now days, ... people tend to rely more on electrical power and have achieved a level of security, comfort and dependency as a result. Without electricity many people can become disoriented, confused or angry often requiring immediate assistance or a comforting soul to interact with. Be aware of the needs of others and act on kindness to help those in despair.

A short term loss of electricity occurring at night usually presents itself as a surprise, ... especially when discovered at an inopportune moment. It means that alarm clocks and other devices we depend on may fail without notice. Hot water for showers and coffee pots may be off line. No one likes that kind of surprise, ... especially for those working type individuals who are on tight schedules. This typically causes many people to be late going out the door which inevitably prompts us to make up for the loss of time by commuting faster and more aggressively. Statistics typically reflect this by the result of an increase in auto accidents following late night power outages. Those who commonly experience frequent outages prepare themselves by relying on devices such as a wind up clock or a cell phone alarm. They will boil water to prepare themselves for the day and allow a little more time to get to work. A general practice of allowing more time to get ready in the morning is advantageous and conducive in avoiding a chaotic morning.

Battery back up systems or UPS, (uninterrupted power source), are becoming a household word now days for survival minded enthusiasts. These units can vary in size and capability and have the potential to power electrical devices for hours when local utility power has failed, ... as it will. Battery backup systems vary in size and capability and are good for limited use and duration. Conservation of battery power is important to manage during an outage.

Most people typically have enough food in their homes to get past a few hours without electrical power so it is not an issue during short duration outages. A short term outage of electrical power is generally not life threatening.

.

.

.

Extended duration

.

Extended duration's without electricity presents a new set of problems for those reliant upon the resource. A reasonable definition for extended periods without electricity might encompass a period of between 24 hours to 4 days. On many occasions power has been out long enough to have a heavier impact to modern societal communities. For those reliant upon electricity this is when the party time ends. These are times when living without electrical power becomes more than an inconvenience. Perishable foods begin to deteriorate as the cupboard empties. Markets and stores may only stay open at a reduced level of service which means long lines and depleted inventory. If the power outage is local and confined to a neighborhood resources can be acquired from across town. however, ... if the outage is regional encompassing entire city or state the situation escalates in severity.

Power outages for well developed areas typically do not extend in duration beyond 24 to 48 hours in extreme cases due to modernization of switching gear. Those who are accustomed to periodic power outages generally expect the power to return within this time frame or sooner. It only becomes a problem when the duration without power extends beyond what is expected or planned for. The odds are far less for extended power outages to occur than they are for indefinite periods. Modern electrical distribution equipment can switch power from alternate locations and contingency plans are developed by local and state regulations to minimize down time of the electrical grid.

Preparations for extended duration's without electricity include but are not limited by 5 to 7 days of food and water, alternate methods of heating out living spaces, first aid kits, appropriate communication devices and a friendly demeanor. Tensions are higher during extended periods as such so be advised to protect family yet be helpful to others. What goes around,.... comes around. Additional preparations for this stage might include alternate forms of producing electrical power such as generators, solar panels and UPS systems, ... all of which are applicable for extended duration's. All of these preparations include vulnerabilities such as depletion of fuels and lack of sunlight. These methods of preparation have their limitations but are well enough worth it for a few days of power outages. Those those who rely on electricity for environmental heating would benefit from having stored a propane heater with a few backup bottles. These are typically available at an outdoors or camping retailer or market place.  Be advised that these devices may require ventilation of sorts. Safety first!!! Additional options for comfort heating are those little packages of heat cloth which can be stuffed into shoes and gloves. They don't last forever but can supplement the need for warmth well enough.

Long term or indefinite duration

.

For most people, ... living in a modern and technical society has become natural and is often taken for granted. The concept of loosing electricity indefinitely is not something most people plan for or even consider. It is expected that electrical power will always be restored within a short period of time and typically not accommodated for as a potential disaster. Survival minded enthusiasts are far more open minded about the real potential for such a calamity and tend to initiate measures of safeguarding against the consequences. An indefinite loss of electrical power can occur as a result of natural and intentional events and should be accommodated for by those who wish to avoid the shock of abrupt transitions between life styles, ... which can be inevitable for those unprepared. This level of outage is planned for as permanent and without resolution. Despite that understanding it is still a hope that electricity can be restored sometime in the near future, ... regardless of how long that may take. Until such a time when that happens it is beneficial to achieve levels of self reliance so as to avoid the majority of chaotic environments associated with long term or indefinite loss to public utilities. Long term loss of electrical power has residual effects which may not always be considered. Impacts to water & sewage operations as well as routes or methods of transportation are very likely. Enacting the following measures during long term or indefinite outages of electrical power can be conducive and advantageous for surviving this level of calamity or disaster.

.

.

Preparations for long term or indefinite loss of electrical power include but are not limited to the following:

.

»  Developing a self reliant and positive mindset

This is the change within us that prompts action in the name of self preservation. It is the change in the way of thinking which causes concern and motivation. The effects can be enlightening for those with the desire to live beyond most all calamities. The desire to be self reliant is one of those effects associated with any particular enlightenment or realization that surviving many such disasters is possible. Self reliance simply means to rely upon one's own knowledge and skills in the aim of encouraging the potential of surviving any number of disasters. A positive and healthy demeanor or outlook is also conducive for encouraging survival for others as well as ourselves. A self reliant person expects very little or nothing from others and does not rely on government assistance or rescue for provisions. Self reliant people accept the realizations of having to live with less during struggling times. The more self reliant we are, ... the better chances we have for surviving the loss of technical and electrical utility services. [Self reliant]

.

»  Learn and practice new skills

This is often the result of a changed mindset. The way of looking at things for the most part prompting the acquisition of specific knowledge and skills known to be conducive for survival. Learning to build Eco systems that when created correctly can provide reoccurring sustenance of meat and garden greens. Utilizing alternative methods of cooking such as when using a solar oven or Fresnel lens. Finding and cleaning drinking water, extracting usable fuel from wood to power a generator, how to make a wind or water wheel generator, advanced first aid and medical skills and more. Many survival minded enthusiasts are content pursuing wilderness styles of assistance, ... somewhat like camping, ... for a really long time. Easier said than done. Most people know what its like when we've had enough of camping. It's fun for a few days until the desire to go "home" creeps into the picture. Learning new skills also means to develop a resistance to those feelings and desires.  Additional knowledge to increase measures of security and self defense are also advantageous for this stage of outage. Learning to avoid chaotic or dangerous situations ranks high for survival minded enthusiasts. This means to increase the knowledge beneficial for "bugging out" to alternate locations. Added knowledge can include the increase of intuition and awareness for the potentials in psychological and human behavior. Desperate times most often reveal the nastier side of people. It is therefor an advantage to possess skills in profiling others. For some people, ... the extent of preparations goes no farther than to take what others have. Trust will become extremely important. The breach of trust only needs to be broken once to destroy a plan of action and future chances of survival. [New skills]

.

»  Advantageous locations

Just in case, ... for this level of outage, ... a plan of action might include visiting alternate or bugout locations. For many people, ... remaining in the same location during long term or indefinite periods of time without electrical power may present situations of added danger. Getting out of the way from danger is beneficial. It is often thought that having like minded people to gather with in these alternate locations is also advantageous for a number of reasons. Alliances in manageable numbers has proven to work well. [Find a bugout location]

.

» Alliances & security

Alliances are typically strong when comprised primarily of like minded people. Divisions among the group is less likely to occur as a result of tighter bonds. When people wok together without the drama and chaos trustworthy relationships are created. Provisions are accounted for, no one betrays the group to outsiders and security is strong and choreographed to work. Measures of security are important. Aligning ourselves with smart and self reliant people is certainly a bonus. [Alliance]

.

» Beneficial equipment

This stage of power outage certainly requires a change in mental well-being. With applicable new skills and knowledge comes the desire to keep an array of things stored in case of disasters and calamities. In addition to items mentioned in the previous level for extended outages, ... water, food, cash, generators and fuel, ... survival minded people keep extended amounts of stuff which to many, ... looks like trash and junk. A 50 gallon drum or burn barrel for instance along with a couple of old ammo can and hoses can extract usable fuel from fire wood to run a generator. An old car alternator/generator can be used to build a wind power device. The combination of copper and zinc rods with lemon juice or other acidic liquids can produce battery power. Building a distillation device can be built from junk for the purpose of making moonshine fuel or disinfecting antiseptic as well as produce clean water. An old flat screen TV screen can be used to boil water, Foils and cardboard can be used to create solar ovens for cooking food. Engaging in a self reliant lifestyle brings forth beneficial knowledge and skills prompting the need or desire to store a few things conducive for building any number of innovative gadgets known to be supplemental for producing electrical energy.

.

»  First aid and infection control

Advanced tactics in first aid and infection prevention should be considered as high priority. Most societal breakdowns during such events include the increase of infection and sickness largely due to poor hygiene and waste management practices. It goes without saying that having increased knowledge and skills in medicine is advantageous but prevention is  a key factor in fighting the birth of an epidemic within the alliance or group. An increase of knowledge in this subject matter leads to maximizing potential uses of all wastes such as with gardening for would be botanists. Using a still to purify water or make disinfectants aids in infection control measures. Simple measures such as washing hands can make the difference between healthy survival and severe illness within a group. [Infection control] , [Waste management]

.

»  Forms of currency or trade

Long term or indefinite power outages bring forth a number of additional complications and impactful changes. Current and existing forms of money and currency may quickly become obsolete and far less desired than tangible goods such as ammo, food, water and fuel. Many survival minded people tend to collect items suspected to be of greater value in times of great calamity and change. People with existing habits for instance may be willing to trade their precious resources for a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of alcohol. Learning to make alcohol from a distiller is conducive for a higher trade off in value in many cases. Other forms of value to be traded might include clean water, aspirin and pain relievers, a well as precious coins or rounds made from silver or gold. Having the ability to trade with others goes a long way to supplement those times when we need something which others posses and likewise. Always be cautious of those attempting to deceive or lie with the aim of taking or appropriating provisions without reasonable exchange. Be prepared that existing forms of currency may become obsolete and useless during times of desperation. [Alternate forms of currency or trade]

.

»  Food & water

Many prepper type enthusiasts understand that during long term disasters acquisition of food and water may become a challenge. For that reason they typically plan to utilize a variety of measures to accommodate their needs. Foods can be stored and used according to their expected life span. Perishables are generally consumed first followed by canned foods and then dehydrated or freeze dried foods, ... some of which can be stored for years. While this is being managed a method of creating an ECO system to sustain and grow food can be implemented in hopes of providing food for the future. The stored food is simply a bridge allowing time for the gardening to take root and succeed. Water must be conserved and used to its full extent. Some water can be used for drinking while other water can be used for feeding gardens. Water can be located in places that are not always seen. Extracting water from plants or underground can be accomplished with additional knowledge and training. The use of a witching rod to locate water is still effective and practice. [Find it]

.

»  Communications

All forms of encouraging communication is important for obtaining as much information as possible. Knowledge is life giving and can mean the difference between success or failure. If for instance, ... electrical failure causes residual effects that are headed our way it can certainly be advantageous to understand the consequences so as to act accordingly. If civil upheaval is headed your way would it not be a benefit to know about it ahead of time? With small doses of electricity, ... produced from alternate forms generated with self reliant measures, ... Ham & CB radios can be utilized to obtain vital and current information. Other forms of communications include code words between alliances and noise traps to prevent unexpected visitors. Having a little knowledge on languages used in nearby regions is a plus for those looking to travel through those areas while bugging out. Note: CB radios are limited to range and frequency. Many survival minded enthusiasts tend to accommodate for range and frequency limitations by grabbing equipment that will cover a multitude of frequencies. Additional power is often required to reach out further that a 5 or 10 mile radius. They call this "Peaked & Tweaked" It is also advantageous to keep a scanner to monitor local and state police as well as potential troop movements. [More]

.

»  Have a plan of action

A plan of action not only pertains to planning ahead for a disaster or calamity, ... it also means to set long term goals for the group if so associated with one. The concept of working together to rebuild some form of the luxuries of our lives keeps us united and moving forward. Without a healthy vision for a brighter future humans can wander aimlessly without direction or hope. It's just the way we are. The results of complacency can  a disaster all by itself. [Planning]

 .

.

The bottom line is, ... surviving a life without electrical power is achievable. Many survival minded enthusiasts are acclimating themselves for longer duration's off public utility grids. They implement new knowledge and practice applicable skills conducive for survival. This does not mean living a life without electricity. Innovation and resources have bridged the gap between depending upon mass utility systems and becoming self reliant. We don't have to learn how to live like out ancestors did, ... despite the advantageous. We simply need to learn additional skills and knowledge to supplement times of disruption to energy supply grids which are out of our control. To become independent is certainly a virtue and builds confidence in the end.
