Increasing the odds of surviving a solar flare

The description for "Solar flare" can be found under "Why be prepared"

.

Prelude

Though surviving a solar flare or other damaging effects from the sun does not rank high for many people, ... survival minded enthusiasts still find it appropriate to take precautionary measures just the same. Such events simply do not have enough historical recordings to warrant anything more than a scare tactic or two by would be perpetualists. This sort of disaster or calamity may not make much of a story line for a great Hollywood movie but t does inevitably bring us back to the potentials which so many people do prepare for none the less. As mentioned in the description or situation content page, ... a massive solar flare or CME can create havoc for modern civilizations who are reliant and dependent upon technology and forms of routine order. Most any situation which has the potential to cause sudden impact or heavy disruption to modern ways of life should be considered appropriate to have applicable counter measures of preparedness, ... just in case. Worst case scenarios for solar flares depict chaos and severe health issues which can be accommodated with a little understanding and preparedness.

.

.

The following is intended to provide relative information known to be effective and conducive for surviving extreme solar flares and CME's.

.

.

.

General preparations

.

Much of the preparations applicable for the damaging effects of an extreme solar flare are relatively similar to that of other disasters and calamities known to impact modern technology. Preparing for an EMP, (electro-magnetic-pulse), will be advantageous and considered a proactive and defensive measures against harmful effects of a massive solar flare. Additional measures of preparation include factors concerning the health and the well-being of living organisms, ... specifically human life forms. Protection against solar radioactive discharge known to cause cell deterioration is important to consider as extreme levels of radiation can be directed towards planets containing life forms.

.

A crucial key in protection against such effects is to have the benefit of advanced warning.

Advanced warning potentials

.

Researchers may have discovered a new method to predict solar flares more than a day before they occur, providing advance warning to help protect satellites, power grids and astronauts from potentially dangerous radiation. The system works by measuring differences in gamma radiation emitted when atoms in radioactive elements "decay," or lose energy. This rate of decay is widely believed to be constant, but recent findings challenge that long-accepted rule.

The new detection technique is based on a hypothesis that radioactive decay rates are influenced by solar activity, possibly streams of subatomic particles called solar neutrinos. This influence can wax and wane due to seasonal changes in the Earth's distance from the sun and also during solar flares, according to the hypothesis, which is supported with data published in a dozen research papers since it was proposed in 2006, said Ephraim Fischbach, a Purdue University professor of physics.

The Met Office and Space Weather Prediction Center now provides forecasts for space weather to help the public and industry prepare for solar storms that may pose a risk to infrastructure, as outlined in the graphic shown below.

.

.

Additional advantages include having a plan of action and appropriate equipment known to be conducive for surviving such an event.

.

.

Upon notification

.

Once an alert has been given for a pending impact event it may be prudent to take immediate action and implement the following measures to assure the safety and well-being of persons and equipment. The following measures have been listed with the aim of assisting those who wish to avoid higher levels of chaos and disruption. It has been estimated that inhabitants of Earth have approximately 12 to 18 hours of warning prior to an impact event, ... give or take a few hours due to seasonal positions between the sun and Earth.

.

»  Avoid using public transportation for a few days. Trains, planes etc.

»  Cover electronic and communications equipment with a "Faraday cage" or other protective shield, just in case. Despite claims made by so called "experts", ... mother nature has a nasty way of uprooting all they think is factual. Why take that chance. Just do it for added insurance. It is smarter to err on the side of caution and be prepared for anything.

»  Pull out those radiation detectors, badges etc and be ready to take a few doses of radiation pills. (Potassium Iodide)

»  Gather or purchase supplies such as food and water, ... enough for a few days at least.

»  Fuel up the vehicle and make ready any vehicles to be used in case evacuation is necessary.

»  Have a bug out plan ready to implement just in case leaving the area seems like a good idea.

»  Monitor current news as well as activity for state and local authorities.

»  Contact, assist and gather those with special needs and be ready to offer help where needed for those less fortunate.

»  Have a plan of action which includes living without public utilities.

»  Charge cell phones, laptops, batteries and other equipment during the waiting period. These devices stand a better chance of working once the event has passed, ... especially if they have been charged.

»  Those living in cold regions can benefit from assuring sources of heat in case of long and unexpected duration of power failures.

»  Accounting for special medical needs is also important as many pharmacy or department stores may choose to remain closed during and after the event.

»  Accommodating for the needs of pets should be considered as well.

»  It may be advantageous to disconnect car batteries during the event so as to avoid residual damage.

»  Be prepared to utilize alternate forms of energy but leave them disconnected as well until the event has passed.

»  Implement measures to protect vehicle wiring and components. Some effects from a massive solar flare or CME can be similar to variations of an EMP.

Preparing for worse case scenarios

.

Preparing for a worse case scenario means to embrace the concept of becoming very self reliant. To depend on methods and skills set apart from government and corporate systems of assistance or relief. That of course is easier said than done.

The majority of people are typically unwilling to put fourth the time and effort to become more self reliant now days. In the past, ... it was something to be expected of everyone.  Modern  civilizations certainly have their advantages and levels of comfort but it inevitably comes with some unfortunate side effects. It is typically existing with the inability to live beyond the ease of procuring the necessities of life from markets or to rely upon handouts from the government. Self reliance comes with a degree of acquiring knowledge and training followed by measures of acclimation and discomfort. Who wants to experience that when life can be so much easier. There are of course people who feel it is unimportant to make preparations of any kind as their ideas for acquisition of resources extends no further than taking from others.

The ignorance of such a believe system is apparent, ... especially for survival minded people who  know that sooner or later these individuals will eventually perish despite their aggressive attempts. This sort of belief system or ideology is flawed as it is still depends on the ease of acquiring provisions from others instead of depending upon their own skills and knowledge. It also presents aspect of increased risk to their own lives as supplies run out or they die by the hands of those who are well versed in such agenda's. Survival minded enthusiasts understand and practice defensive measures and are extremely cunning as well as observant. Their arsenal often includes proximity sensing equipment, ... such as dogs, ... night vision as well as heavy amounts of firearms and bullet resistant gear. Many prepper type individuals utilize fox holes tree perches, ghillie suits as well as a degree of suspicion and intuition to catch would be thieves in the act. Preparation is more than a hobby for many enthusiasts. It is a way of life which has been detailed and choreographed to a fine art. The chances of successful theft by any means from a prepper or survivalist is not too likely and should be avoided at all costs. For those who are UN-prepared, ... it may be advantageous to have items of value for trade coupled with an approachable demeanor conducive for self preservation. Just another way to survive.

Governments and corporations prepare for solar flares and CME's,

... shouldn't we as well?

Governments are taking precautionary measures in preparation of a massive solar flare or CME. It is considered by many such survival enthusiasts that these measures are indications that we as citizens should take note and make the best plan of action for ourselves as well. Not all government plans for action are beneficial for their citizens. Many governmental plans are simply designed to ensure continuance and flow of administrative power and authority. These plans do not typically include providing resources for the general public. It is our job to become self reliant in matters of survival.

US Government Hatches Plan For Catastrophic Solar Flares and Other Space Weather Events

.

The White House, ... aware of the threats posed by these events, ... released a contingency plan in case a massive electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from solar flares wipes out power grids. Such an event would make cellphones, credit cards, the internet and electric lights useless.

The government has already taken steps to mitigate the unwanted effects of space weather events. Efforts included the replacement of old satellite assets that are crucial to forecasting and monitoring space weather, proposals for space-weather standards, development of regulations that would ensure continued operation of electric grids in case an extreme space weather event occurs, and proposal for a new option to replace important Extra High Voltage (EHV) transformers destroyed by space weather event.

To improve preparedness, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) released the National Space Weather Action Plan (PDF) and the National Space Weather Strategy (PDF), which involve other agencies to take part in making preparations for a worst-case scenario such as the 1859 Carrington event, a powerful geomagnetic solar storm that caused telegraph lines to explode at the time.

The plans seek to improve forecasting abilities for space weather events, launch a Space Weather Data Initiative, and boost space-weather training and education efforts, among others.

"Our Nation's security, economic vitality, and daily functioning depend on the reliable operations of satellites and aircraft, communications networks, navigation systems, and the electric power grid," the OSTP said in a statement. "Efforts will facilitate the integration of space-weather considerations into planning and decision-making at all levels, ensuring that the United States is appropriately prepared for and resilient to future space-weather events."  [Source]
